Ever wondered what happens when you sleep?

We all sleep, yet it is perhaps a daily necessity that we all take for granted the most. Several researches have established that sleep is essential to maintain mood and improve memory and cognitive functioning. Most of us believe that sleeping is a way for the body to rest and rejuvenate. But there?s much more to sleep. When we sleep, we go through different stages of sleep, each serving an important role to maintain a healthy body and brain. In essence, sleep is divided into two major stages ? quiet sleep and dreaming / REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Throughout our sleep, we alternate between quiet sleep and REM sleep. Quiet sleep helps rest and restores the body whereas REM sleep relaxes and revitalizes the brain.
